A lot has been said and written about Tottenham’s issues in central defence this season.
None of Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld or Davinson Sanchez have had particularly good campaigns so far, although Sanchez is showing signs of coming back into form over recent games.
That was perhaps why Jose Mourinho reportedly wanted to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar last summer.
The deal looked likely to go through at one point with the Slovak’s agent even being pictured with Tottenham’s technical director, Steve Hitchen, in Italy (Gianluca Di Marzio).
However, Tottenham failed to get the deal for the defender over the line and had to settle for Joe Rodon from Swansea in the end.
A report from Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) has now revealed the details behind why the negotiations for Skriniar collapsed.
The report claims that the Nerrazuri were not willing to let the 26-year-old leave for less than €60m (£51.8m), a fee that Spurs were not willing to meet.
It is suggested that Antonio Conte should thank his ‘old enemy’ Mourinho for not pushing harder for Skriniar last summer.
Spurs Web Opinion
Skrinair has established himself as a key part of the Inter side this season and I doubt whether the Serie A club would be willing to sell him on the back of his displays.
Last summer seemed like our one and only opportunity to snap up the Slovak. However, if it is true that Inter demanded upwards of £50m, then I am not surprised that Spurs pulled out of the deal.
