Alan Hutton believes that some of the Tottenham players cannot handle the pressure Jose Mourinho has put them under this season.
After Tottenham threw away a lead for the umpteenth time this season against Newcastle last Sunday, the Spurs boss was quite critical of the performance his players put in.
The Telegraph reported a few days ago that some of the Spurs players are ‘fed up’ at the Portuguese coach for pointing the finger at them and telling them they are not good enough.
However, Mourinho shot back at the media on Friday, accusing the press of speculating on things without having any idea of what goes on behind the scenes at the club.
Hutton believes that the Tottenham boss would be better served boosting his players’ confidence, insisting that the likes of Davinson Sanchez are not able to cope with the pressure that the 58-year-old is putting them under.
The former Tottenham defender told Football Insider: “I think you can see sometimes where confidence isn’t where it should be.
“I think that’s how mistakes have come about from the likes of Sanchez. He’s had a lot of pressure on his shoulders from the likes of Mourinho.
“You look at Serge Aurier at right-back, Tanganga’s come in and played, Doherty isn’t there. You need a little bit of confidence sometimes from the manager.
“I just don’t feel, at times when it’s needed, Mourinho has given it to the players. In certain times on the pitch you can see it where the confidence is low. I don’t think that’s helped them.
“They’ve been really up and down this season. They’ve been great one minute and just really poor the next. I think that’s the problem, that’s the frustrating part.”

It is apparent from the Tottenham players’ body language, particularly in the final 10 to 15 minutes of games, that they are short of confidence and fearful of giving a goal away.
While that tends to happen when results have been as poor as they have over the last couple of months, perhaps the extra pressure Mourinho puts on them is also having an adverse effect on their ability to express themselves.
