Eric Dier has praised Dele Alli for the performance the midfielder put in on his return to the starting line up against Sheffield United.
Ryan Mason decided to start with a front four of Alli, Kane, Son and Bale on Sunday, only the second time that all four have started together this season.
Mason’s bravery was certainly rewarded, with Tottenham’s attacking firepower proving too much for the Blades, who were blown away 4-0.
Alli started the game a little rusty but grew into the match in the second half and started seeing more of the ball in dangerous positions.
Dier insisted that the 24-year-old does not get the credit he deserves for the ground he covers and the way in which he presses the opposition.
When asked about Alli’s display, the centre-back told The Independent: “I thought he played really well.
“From the inside, I can tell you he’s been working really hard and trained really well. And against Sheffield United, he put that on the pitch.
“Everyone knows his qualities, but I think he also has a lot of qualities which go unnoticed. The amount of second balls he wins, the amount he runs for the team and presses.
“He’s always attached to the game, it’s like he’s on a string to the ball. He is always attached to the game in every moment and that’s a great quality to have.”
It is not often that Spurs get four goals and Kane fails to get on the scoresheet but it was Bale who was the star of the show for the Lilywhites on Sunday, with the Welshman netting his first hat-trick for the club since 2012.
Son’s brilliantly-taken fourth goal put the icing on the cake for the home side and Dier admitted that it is a pleasure to play alongside such potent attackers who are capable of hurting the opposition at any time.
He added: “Obviously it’s a very nice feeling. It’s a luxury to play behind them and with all of their qualities I think they complement each other really well.
“They each have slightly different qualities and it’s a pleasure to play with them.
“There is a lot of firepower there and a lot to back it up – their history, their goals and assists, and what they have done in the game.
“I think we have a lot of quality up front, even off the bench. We have a lot of quality in attack that no opposition would like to come up against. That includes Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn, Erik Lamela and the others as well.
“We have a lot of options and they are all options nobody would like to play against.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is certainly the case that Dele does not get the credit he deserves for his work rate and his pressing. However, at the same time, a section of Spurs fans also seem to overrate his ability on the ball based on what we saw from him three years ago.
Dele deserves a run of matches in the side but the jury is still out on whether he could return to the level he produced in 2017.
I believe he slows the game down too much when he comes deeper to pick up the ball and that the team has to be set up around him if he is to be effective.
