Portsmouth boss, Danny Cowley, has admitted that he would like to re-sign Harvey White on loan for next season and that he has already had a conversation with Ryan Mason.
White impressed when he got minutes under his belt for the Tottenham first-team in the Europa League and the FA Cup this season.
The club loaned the midfielder out to Pompey in January and he has since gone on to make 20 appearances in League one, scoring with an excellent header in February at Oxford to win that game.
The 19-year-old has had only one start under Cowley, who replaced Kenny Jackett in March, but he has made seven appearances off the bench.
Cowley admitted that he is good friends with Mason and that he had a conversation with the interim Spurs boss about signing White for next season.
He told Portsmouth News: “We know Ryan Mason really well actually, now he’s Tottenham manager we can say we’re good friends!” Cowley was reported by the Portsmouth News as saying in his latest press conference.
“We’ve done some of our coaching badges together, we’ve got to know him well and he’s a really great guy.
“Now he’s the key man at Tottenham we’ve asked the question and had a conversation.
“We don’t know if we will be privileged enough to make those decisions, but on behalf of the club we’ve enquired because he’s a young player on a massive upward curve who’s only going to get better and better.”
Cowley also lavished praise on White, revealing that the Tottenham academy product is trying to develop the physical aspect of his game to go with his technical quality.
The Pompey boss added: “We’ve loved Harvey, he’s a great kid.
“We told him he’s coming on last Saturday, he’s 19 and he’s coming on to give us a bit of maturity. That’s what he did.
“He kept the ball and used it well, he’s a lovely, lovely footballer. Great left foot and great range of pass.
“He can go over the opponent, through or around the opponent. He’s working every day on the physical aspect of the game and work against the ball.
“You’ve seen us use him. He’s a 19-year-old boy in a key position and you’ve seen us use him time and time again. We’d have no hesitation in doing that.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Mason had not been appointed as the interim first-team boss, he would still have a big say on the decisions regarding academy players as the club’s Head of Player Development.
I expect White to be loaned out again next season and given that he seems to have settled down well at Fratton Park and is getting regular minutes under his belt, I would not be surprised if he spends another year at Pompey.
