Ahead of Manchester City’s Champions League final clash against Chelsea this evening, Kyle Walker has admitted that he joined Pep Guardiola’s side to compete for the biggest trophies in the game.
This City side have an opportunity to enter the history books as they march out for the club’s first-ever Champions League final in Porto.
Few would have imagined that Tottenham would reach the final two years before Guardiola’s star-studded squad but looking at the success Walker has enjoyed during his four years at the Etihad, his decision to move has certainly been justified.
Walker was rumoured to have fallen out with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino towards the end of the 2016-17 season and a few eyebrows were raised when City paid £50m to get the right-back.
However, the investment has proven to be a smart one, with the England international playing a key role in City’s three Premier League title wins since then.
Walker has admitted that he was convinced he would be able to win trophies at the Etihad as soon as he spoke to Guardiola.
The former Spurs star told The Telegraph: “When I signed here, I signed here because I wanted to win things.
“I’m not saying Tottenham were never going to win things and when I did sign, the two seasons prior to that Tottenham finished above Manchester City.
“But just how the manager spoke to me, obviously the calibre of players that they had, the depth in players they had, I wanted to come here and hopefully win.
“With the amount of things I have won, did I ever think it was going to be like this? No. Would I have been happy with one Premier League title? More than happy. More than happy, but to win three, four Carabao, two Community Shields.
“As much as people don’t class them, it’s a trophy to me. The FA Cup, being in the final of the Champions League, more than my wildest dreams.
“I’m glad I’ve been a part of this era, to put Manchester City where Manchester City have wanted to be since the owner took over.
“To get this club to where it should be and what the owners have invested in, the team that we’ve got, the manager that we’ve got, this should be, hopefully, the icing on the cake.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Falling out with Kyle Walker was arguably one of the biggest mistakes Pochettino made during his time at Spurs. The Walker-Rose combination at full-back was just as instrumental to our success in 2016/17 as the Dembele-Wanyama pivot and it is no surprise that we have not been able to reach that level since.
