According to the print edition of Correire dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Paulo Fonseca learned through media reports that Tottenham had ended their interest in appointing him.
Fonseca looked certain to be the next Spurs head coach earlier this week but Tottenham’s managerial hunt took another dramatic turn as the North London club ended their interest in the Portuguese coach and made a move for Gennaro Gattuso instead.
The club were then forced to abandon their pursuit of the Italian after backlash from some fans on social media, leaving them back in square one in their hunt for Jose Mourinho’s replacement.
There have been several reasons mooted for the collapse in talks with Fonseca, including an alleged disagreement between the former Roma boss and Tottenham’s new managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, on the allocation of the transfer budget.
TuttoSport have now explained that a deal was all but agreed and Fonseca fully expected to be announced as the new Spurs head coach after spending two days with Paratici ‘planning strategies and discussing every detail’.
The report accuses Paratici of betraying Fonseca, stating that: ‘This is a story of illusions, mockery, misdirection, deviation. A story that goes beyond the normal dynamics of the market.’
It is explained that Paratici was not on board with Fonseca’s insistence of sticking to his preferred 4-2-3-1 rather than playing a three-man defence.
The former Juve man reportedly did not call Fonseca to inform him of his decision to move on to other targets which is said to have angered the 48-year-old, who learned about the snub from media reports.
Spurs Web Opinion
One major issue that Spurs now have in their managerial pursuit is that whoever we now go for, is going to know that they are not anywhere near the top of the club’s preferred candidates. It remains to be seen if the likes of Ten Hag or Potter can now be tempted to jump ship from their stable projects, knowing full well that the Tottenham hierarchy is not fully convinced by them.
