Simon Jordan has questioned why Tottenham went after Paulo Fonseca in the first place after the club’s talks with the Portuguese coach collapsed.
Fonseca seemed destined to join Tottenham earlier this month, with multiple reports indicating that it was only a matter of time before the coach signed for the North London club.
However, talks seemed to collapse abruptly, with Spurs instead choosing to begin negotiations with Gennaro Gattuso, which they eventually had to call off after backlash from Spurs fans.
Some sources have claimed that Fonesca was left surprised at Tottenham’s decision to move on after holding positive talks with him.
It has even been suggested that Tottenham’s decision to snub the former boss had to do with Italian tax laws which would prevent the 48-year-old from enjoying the same privileges in England as he did during his time in Serie A.
Whatever the reason behind the collapse, Jordan insisted that Fonseca had not done enough to warrant the Spurs job in the first place.
The former Crystal Palace owner told talkSPORT (22/06/21 from 10:00 am): “Paulo Fonseca’s tax problems in Italy probably means somebody else has got to pick his tax bill up, which Tottenham didn’t want to do.
“Paulo Fonseca. Why would you want him? With the greatest will in the world. He hardly pulled up any trees in Roma, did he?
“And you have a billionaire owner in Roma that doesn’t want to back him.
“He would rather get rid of him and bring in the guy that Tottenham didn’t want. It doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
