Former reported Tottenham target Marcel Sabitzer has revealed he was willing to accept a reduced role at Bayern Munich compared to the one he had at RB Leipzig in order to facilitate a summer transfer.
The Austrian international left Die Roten Bullen at the end of August in a deal worth €16 million (£13.7m) plus add-ons, moving to the reigning Bundesliga champions and bringing an end to a seven-year stint in Saxony.
Sabitzer, 27, had reportedly been on the radar of Spurs for a handful of transfer windows before this point, but nothing advanced ever came about between the two clubs.
It was previously reported that Spurs’ bitter rivals Arsenal also took a firm interest in the playmaker, but were again met with the same fate.
Sabitzer was announced as RB Leipzig’s captain at the beginning of last season, and although he spent only one campaign with the armband, he has admitted he was happy to accept a potentially lessened role at giants Bayern as it is a dream move for him.
Sabitzer told Kicker: “It was always a dream to come here. Bayern Munich is, of course, a house number.
“When you come to FC Bayern, it makes sense that you will be a challenger first. The situation has, of course, changed for me, that is obvious.
“At RB Leipzig, I was an absolute regular player, I matured to become a captain and was a leading player.”

A player like Sabitzer would have fit perfectly into the Spurs side, as the team has sorely missed a playmaker since Eriksen’s departure in 2020.
But there’s not much the club could do if he had his heart set on a move to Bayern, which was always going to be the case given the recent nature of transfers of that standard in the Bundesliga.
