Some Spurs fans on social media were left frustrated by reports that Tottenham valued Harry Winks at £40m this summer amidst apparent interest from multiple Premier League clubs.
Winks struggled for game time for the majority of last season under Jose Mourinho and the midfielder was linked with a move away from Spurs during the summer.
However, the 25-year-old ended up staying put at his boyhood club, with sources claiming that he was keen to fight for his place under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Winks was handed his first Premier League start of the season at Selhurst Park on Saturday and his performance left a lot to be desired as Spurs were turned over 3-0.
The Times reported on Monday that while Tottenham were open to cashing in on Winks in the summer, the £40m price tag they put on the midfielder stopped Aston Villa and Everton from pursuing the England international.
Some Spurs fans have insisted that Daniel Levy was being unrealistic in his valuation of Winks and that the midfielder should have been moved on in the summer.
He’s not worth that! He’s a major liability for us. He has good technicals but no football brain to see a pass to cut through a defence.

Most people didn't want to sell Winks to City for 40m, whether it was true or not

So we don’t want Winks but value him at £40m
We want Traore but value him at £30m
Can people not see the problem here?

I appreciate Winks is English and homegrown etc, but £40m is way too high if we were looking to move him on. https://t.co/2XvpEUrsta

Spurs Web Opinion
Every fan base has a couple of players who are usually scapegoated for bad results and Winks certainly appears to be one for Spurs fans (as Eric Dier was at points last season).
While the 25-year-old did struggle against Palace, I do not think he played any worse than the likes of Kane and Dele.
I also understand why Tottenham valued Winks at the reported price as I could easily see him going to a Leeds/Everton and shining as I do not believe he is as bad a player some Spurs fans consider him to be.
Besides, the £40m price might have just been a negotiating position. Perhaps, Spurs would have considered offers around £30m- £35m for him this summer if there was serious interest.
