Houssem Auoar has revealed that he wants to play more Champions League football with Lyon in the future and is currently fully concentrated on the French side.
The 23-year-old playmaker appeared on the radar of Spurs at various points throughout the transfer window this summer, but a move never quite happened.
Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal have been long-time admirers of Aouar and showed interest over the summer too, but were met with the same fate.
Both sides eventually passed up on the opportunity to sign the midfielder and looked at other options instead, with Spurs signing Pape Matar Sarr from Metz and Arsenal choosing to re-sign Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid after a spell on loan last season.
However, Aouar has recently expressed his desire to be playing in the Champions League, and would like another opportunity to do so with Lyon.
The Ligue 1 side last appeared in the illustrious European competition in 2019, but the Frenchman is keen to make a return to next season’s competition.
Aouar told Amazon Prime Video (as relayed by Get French Football News): “As someone who’s from Lyon, to be able to play in the Champions League in this stadium is something I’d like to be able to do again – all of that is down to qualifying this season.
“I’m fully concentrated on Lyon. Playing in the Champions League again with my hometown club is an objective and a dream of mine.”
It remains to be seen whether Lyon can match Auoar’s ambition and whether Tottenham and Arsenal can push for European football of their own to tempt a potential future move.

Aouar was available for a cut-price this summer, but neither of the Premier League sides were willing to take up the opportunity to sign him this season.
His intention is to be playing Champions League football, and currently neither Spurs or Arsenal can offer that. Come the end of the season, we will have an indicator as to whether they will return with interest.
