Alan Hutton has claimed he knew straightaway that Steven Bergwijn had suffered a bad injury against Rennes and he expects the winger to be out of action for several weeks.
After helping Tottenham to three consecutive 1-0 wins in their first three Premier League games of the season, Bergwijn missed Spurs’ trip to Crystal Palace after picking up a knock during the international break.
The winger came back into the starting lineup for the Europa Conference League clash at Rennes last week but unfortunately came off injured along with Lucas Moura in the 2-2 draw.
Both Bergwijn and Moura missed the London derby on Sunday as the Lilywhites were trounced 3-0 by Chelsea.
Nuno Espirito Santo revealed on Tuesday that the former Ajax man had a sprain on his foot and had twisted his ankle, adding that he was not sure whether the 23-year-old would be fit for his side’s trip to the Emirates (via Charlie Eccleshare).
Hutton has now opined that he does not expect Bergwijn to be available for the North London derby and admitted that he feels sorry for the Netherlands international after the way he started the campaign.
The former Spurs right-back told Football Insider: “I feel for him. He was not used in the right way under Jose Mourinho.
“Mourinho wanted to be really defensive. Fans were getting on him (Bergwijn) a little bit but it wasn’t his fault. He was being asked to do a defensive job.
“He couldn’t affect the game in the final third the way he wanted to. We’re seeing that this season. I really liked what I’ve seen from him at the start of the season.
“It was a shame for him in the Rennes game, it wasn’t a great tackle. I could tell right away that he had hurt himself. It looks like he could possibly be out for a number of weeks.
“It’s a real shame. because he’s starting to get to the levels where we all know that he can play and be a real threat. It’s a shame for him and the club in general.”

We certainly missed the pace of Bergwijn and Lucas on Sunday as we had no out-ball when we were put under pressure by Chelsea in the second half. I am hoping that at least one of the two are fit to start up front alongside Kane and Son against Arsenal.
