Toby Alderweireld has insisted that Daniel Levy ‘gave 100 per cent’ for Tottenham during his time at the club.
The 32-year-old was one of the final members of Mauricio Pochettino’s golden era at Tottenham to depart the club this summer, leaving to join Qatari side Al-Duhail.
Alerweireld joined Spurs in 2015 and went on to make 236 appearances for the side during a six-year stint in North London.
He enjoyed a positive spell under Pochettino in which Spurs mounted two title challenges, reached a host of domestic semi-finals, a League Cup final and Champions League final, but ultimately came away empty-handed on every occasion.
The club’s chairman, Daniel Levy, has come under scrutiny in recent seasons, with some questioning the levels of investment with regards to taking the club to the next level.
However, Alderweireld insists the Spurs chief did his best for the club during that time and believes fans should look back to that period with enjoyment rather than regret.
Alderweireld told the Evening Standard: “No, no, I don’t think the club can regret anything. I think they did wonderful.
“You don’t know all the things that happen in a club. It’s not Football Manager. I know for sure that [chairman Daniel] Levy gave 100 per cent for the club.
“It’s good they’re not happy with where they are now. The structure is there to be one of the biggest clubs in the world. Maybe they need some more time. I know in football there’s no time but I don’t think the club should have done anything else.
“How many times do you see clubs invest too much and then they’re in trouble? Spurs know what it is to be healthy.
“Of course, it will always be said ‘no silverware’ and I understand that. But it’s a wonderful period in Spurs’ history. I think the fans will enjoy thinking about it.”

It was a big tragedy that Spurs failed to register that spell of football with any kind of silverware to commemorate it. Alderweireld clearly believes Levy put the interests of the club first during that time, but many still feel that extra push should have been pursued by him to keep the foundations of the side strong and fresh.
