The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are losing the battle to get their South American stars back early from the international break.
Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero have been called up by Argentina while Davinson Sanchez and Emerson Royal have joined up with the Colombia and Brazil squads respectively for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Lo Celso, Romero and Sanchez had to quarantine in Croatia for ten days after travelling to South America during last month’s international break and, as a result, missed Tottenham’s trip to Selhurst Park and their clash against Rennes in the Europa Conference League.
It was reported that Spurs were hoping their South American stars would be released earlier this time so they could serve their quarantine and play in the Premier League game against Newcastle United on October 17th.
That would have involved all four players missing the last of their nations’ World Cup Qualifiers during this international break.
However, Kilpatrick has now revealed that Tottenham are not having much success in convincing Argentina, Brazil and Colombia to release their players early, which means all four players are ‘big doubts’ for the Newcastle game.

Given how well Romero and Emerson played against Villa, it would be a shame to see them miss out on the clash against Newcastle. Both players need a run of starts under their belt so that the back four develops a good understanding.
It is certainly not an area of the pitch where Nuno would want to be constantly chopping and changing things but once again, it appears like he might not have much choice.
