Some Wales fans have taken to social media to praise Joe Rodon after his impressive defensive display against Estonia last night.
Rodon showed plenty of promise when opportunities came his way last season but the 23-year-old has found himself having experienced limited opportunity for first-team football during the current campaign, partly due to injury while the club also brought in Cristian Romero during the summer.
The Welshman has had to be content with appearances in the Europa Conference League so far and will be looking to force his way back into Nuno Espirito Santo’s starting eleven.
However, the former Swansea man is still the go-to man in the heart of defence Robert Page’s side and started both of Wales’ World Cup qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Estonia over the international break.
Robert Page’s side emerged 1-0 winners yesterday owing to Kieffer Moore’s 12th-minute strike and Rodon’s solid performance was crucial to helping them keep a clean sheet.
While Wales fans raved about Rodon, some Spurs fans on social media also called for him to start ahead of Eric Dier for the North Londoners.
Felt like we really missed a leader in defence tonight especially when we were under pressure in the second half. Rodon was great but damn I miss that presence Ashley Williams had. #ESTWAL
This Welsh team will get nowhere with Page in charge. We have gone backwards big time since Giggs was charged. Dreadful performance, we were all over the shop. Thank god for Joe Rodon being the rock at the back. #ESTWAL
As passive as can possibly be in CM esp 2nd half but a win is a win and thought Joe Rodon was hands down the best player on the pitch tonight…top CB tbf.
I do believe Rodon has great potential but one cannot base too much on a performance against Estonia. The Premier League is a different kettle of fish altogether and I believe Dier deserves to keep his place in the side based on how he has played so far this season.
