It has proven to be a bittersweet international break for Matt Doherty, with the defender being hailed by the Irish press for his performances but unfortunately picking up a knock against Qatar yesterday.
Doherty certainly has his work cut out to win a place in Tottenham’s starting eleven, with Japhet Tanganga and Emerson Royal both seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.
The 29-year-old has had to be content with opportunities in the Europa Conference League this season despite enjoying great success under Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves.
However, it has been a different story for Doherty in the international scene lately, with the defender having established himself as an important part of Stephen Kenny’s side.
After putting in an impressive display in the Republic of Ireland’s 3-0 win over Azerbaijan last week, the Tottenham man was once again a threat down the right-side against Qatar last night as the Irish emerged 4-0 winners.
Unfortunately, Doherty came off with a knock at half-time and had to be replaced by Cyrus Christie.
However, the Irish press were all-praise for the Spurs defender’s performance in the first 45 minutes.
Balls.ie gave Doherty a rating of 8/10 for his performance and wrote about his display: “Doherty started brilliantly down the right, playing a huge part in a number of attacks. Ireland got plenty of joy down that side.
“He’s stepped up his game at the international level. Although it was a real pity to see him replaced by Cyrus Christie at halftime after picking up a knock.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I did think at the start of the season that Doherty would be given a fresh start under Nuno at Spurs after his struggles last campaign.
The way he has consistently been overlooked by the 47-year-old this season would certainly have not helped the right-back’s confidence.
Barring an injury crisis at right-back, I do not see how the 29-year-old will now be able to rescue his Spurs career.
