Eric Dier has praised the medical professionals at St James’ Park for the way in which they reacted after a fan was taken ill in Newcastle’s clash against Tottenham yesterday.
When Spurs won a corner in the later stages of the first half, Sergio Reguilon was seen alerting referee Andre Marriner to something that was going on in the stands.
It quickly became clear that something had gone horribly wrong when Dier ran to the dugout gesturing to the medical team to take a defibrillator to the stands.
The game was temporarily halted as the fan in question received life-saving treatment and it only resumed once the supporter was stable and able to be taken to hospital.
Dier has now opened up on the harrowing incident, admitting the players could see someone administering CPR in the stands at St James’ Park.
The centre-back told Football.London: “When we walked over to the corner, we were aware because all the fans in that section were making it clear to us and the referee that something was happening.
“We could see someone giving someone else CPR. We could see quite clearly what was going on. Then one of the Newcastle players motioned for a defibrillator to their bench and I ran over to make it clear.
“I spoke to the Newcastle physio afterwards because I didn’t want to make him look bad. That wasn’t my intention. They had defibrillators there [in the stand where the fan was]. There was just a bit of a misunderstanding in the moment.”
The 27-year-old credited the quick reaction of the medical professionals at the ground, insisting that everyone played their part in ensuring that the fan received the help he needed.
The Tottenham man added: “I think the reaction was perfect from everyone, everyone involved. There was a medical professional there who was with the fan really quickly and all the medical staff were there so quickly.
“They deserve all the credit, the medical staff. You never want to see those things happen but a football stadium is one of the safest places for something like that to happen because the response is so quick and there are medical professionals all over the stadium.”

Incidents like the one yesterday and the Eriksen one during the Euros, certainly put football into perspective. The reaction from both sets of players, the referees, the fans and the medical staff was exactly what was required, and they deserve a lot of credit.
