Newcastle winger, Allan Saint-Maximin has thanked Sergio Reguilon for his quick actions in getting the referee to stop the game when a fan collapsed in the stands on Sunday at St James’ Park.
While Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Newcastle was an entertaining affair, what happened on the pitch was overshadowed by a harrowing off-field incident.
A Newcastle fan suffered a cardiac arrest in the later stages of the first half and Reguilon was the first player to alert referee Andre Marriner to the commotion in the stands.
Eric Dier then quickly ran to the dugout to call for the medical team to get a defibrillator to the other corner of the ground where the fan had collapsed.
The game was temporarily suspended and eventually resumed when it was confirmed the fan had become stable after receiving treatment. The patient, who was administered CPR before being taken to hospital, is now reportedly “doing well”.
Reguilon took to social media after the game to post: “Football is not the most important. Get well soon.”
Saint-Maximin has now responded to the Tottenham defender, thanking him for what he did at St James’ Park.
The Newcastle man wrote: “Yesterday we were opponents but above all, we were human beings, thank you for what you did brother.”
