The Evening Standard have revealed that Nuno Espirito Santo’s decision to use a two-tier squad system for the Premier League and the Europa Conference League caused plenty of discontent in the Tottenham dressing room.
Since Nuno’s sacking on Monday morning, there have been plenty of reports detailing all the things that went wrong behind the scenes for the Portuguese coach.
The Evening Standard have now backed up other sources by suggesting that the 47-year-old’s distant and uncommunicative style was perceived as his biggest flaw by those at the club.
It is revealed that Nuno preferred working with a small group and there was a sense within the squad that you were either in or out.
This was allegedly driven home to the players by his decision to leave his entire first eleven back in London for the Europa Conference League clash against Vitesse Arnhem. The decision is said to have left many players in the second eleven angry and demoralised.
It is also explained that the former Wolves boss was quite distant from his players and never entertained players one-on-one in his office.
One senior Spurs star reportedly discovered that he had been dropped from the squad for an away game from a teammate rather than Nuno himself, which is thought to have left him stunned.
It is alleged that Nuno also did not like to address the players immediately after matches as he believed emotions were still too raw, and this is said to have caused frustration among the squad.
Finally, the report reveals that the former Valencia boss’ training ground methods left many players unconvinced.
Nuno is thought to have organised one drill in which the players were told to play out of position, with the forwards in defence and vice-versa. This is said to have left some players baffled and others amused.

The reports that are emerging about Nuno’s struggles behind the scenes does not come as a surprise to me. This is because, even during his short tenure, there were multiple leaks over player discontent regarding the Portuguese coach’s communication style.
I suspect the input from the players played a major role in Paratici’s and Levy’s decision to pull the plug on the project.
