Tim Sherwood has claimed that the relatively short-term contract Antonio Conte has signed at Tottenham Hotspur suits both parties given the Italian’s reputation of delivering instant success.
Some Spurs fans are over the moon after the announcement by the club on Tuesday that Conte will take over the reins from Nuno Espirito Santo.
The Italian has penned a contract with the North London club until 2023, with an option of a further extension.
Some pundits, including Jamie Carragher, have suggested that it is going to take a lot more than 18 months for the 52-year-old to get Tottenham back to where they were during the Mauricio Pochettino era.
However, Sherwood begs to differ, insisting that Conte is not the kind of manager who likes long-term projects.
The former interim Spurs boss told MyBettingSites: “I don’t know Antonio Conte personally, but he has a reputation, he is demanding and he expects everyone at a football club to be accountable.
“That is not a terrible thing, in fact it’s a very good thing. He is not an Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson-type manager that will come in for an extended period.
“If they are talking about 18 months to two years, I can see that it could suit both Conte and Tottenham Hotspur.”
Some have also questioned how the dynamic between Daniel Levy and Conte will work, given the Spurs chairman’s reputation of being tight with funds.
However, Sherwood insisted that the relationship will be great, suggesting the Tottenham hierarchy are desperate for silverware.
He added: “One thing he [Conte] guarantees you is that experience of winning. His relationship with Daniel Levy will be great, as long as the team is winning, I’m sure he would demand some signings though.
“Most of the clubs he has managed have spent money, then Conte has been expected to uphold his end of the bargain – to deliver trophies.
“There is nothing Tottenham want more at this moment in time than to win a trophy.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There are a lot of misconceptions in the media and among the fans about the way Levy operates. The reality is that he has loosened the purse strings since moving to the new stadium (barring a couple of windows in the middle after the pandemic struck).
There were also suggestions that Levy and Mourinho would not be able to work together but Jose only had praise for the Spurs chairman (publicly) during his tenure, which could not be said of his time at Manchester United.
Additionally, it is evident that Levy has now taken a backseat on footballing matters, with Fabio Paratici very much calling the shots. Conte’s relationship with Paratici was likely the reason the 52-year-old agreed to join Spurs.
