‘Is it good enough?’ – Pundit questions Spurs recruitment under Paratici
Jamie O’Hara has claimed that he is not convinced by Tottenham’s recruitment under Fabio Paratici and questioned the club’s business conducted over the summer.
The Italian chief was appointed as Tottenham’s managing director of football in the summer and led the club’s transfer business, acquiring five new signings to begin the side’s long-awaited rebuild.
Spurs recruited Serie A defender of the year Cristian Romero to fill the void left behind by Toby Alderweireld, who departed the club for Qatari outfit Al-Duhail.
Paratici also added Brazilian full-back Emerson Royal as Serge Aurier’s replacement, as well as young Spanish winger Bryan Gil after an exchange for Erik Lamela with Sevilla.
Pape Matar Sarr was also signed from Metz and then loaned back, and Pierluigi Gollini was signed on loan from Atalanta.
While the trio continue to make their mark and settle into English football, former Spurs man O’Hara believes the club’s recruitment has left a lot to be desired and the new players are not at the level of those who departed.
He told talkSPORT (November 1, 9:50 am): “I look at the recruitment and, for me, is it good enough?
“I look the players they’ve brought in; [Cristian] Romero, you paid £50 million for him. Is he any better than what he had before, in terms of [Toby] Alderweireld and [Jan] Vertonghen? No.”
“We brought [Emerson] Royal in. Is he better than what we had before? There’s question marks.
“Bryan Gil has come in. He’s a young lad. Is he better than what we had with [Erik] Lamela? Maybe not. And [Giovani] Lo Celso, he’s not on [Christian] Eriksen’s level.
“The recruitment from the new guy [Paratici] and from Daniel Levy, I still don’t think it’s good enough. Plus, you’ve still got players in Eric Dier who played under [Mauricio] Pochettino.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This view is a little bit rushed in my opinion, as we still haven’t seen the best from all of the players yet. A handful of months is not sufficient enough time to judge their performances. We have to let go of the past and what previous players did for the club if we are to continue the rebuild.
