Michael Bridge has expressed his disappointment with Steven Bergwijn being called up to the Netherlands squad, as he believes the Dutchman could have massively benefitted from a two-week training stint with Antonio Conte.
Bergwijn, 24, was initially left out of Louis Van Gaal’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Montenegro, but has found himself back in the fold as an injury replacement.
The late call up means the winger will now miss out on what is expected to be a gruelling number of sessions held back in North London by new Tottenham manager Conte.
The former Chelsea boss will be using the time away from domestic action as a ‘mini pre-season’, with the Italian planning to get an allegedly slacking squad back into shape, while using it as an opportunity to work on his preferred tactics and system.
However, Sky Sports reporter Bridge feels Bergwijn could have done with remaining in England to train under Conte, and believes spending time with the Italian would have helped his confidence going forward.
The winger has struggled to get back into form for Spurs, playing just 37 minutes of Premier League action since picking up an ankle injury last month.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Bridge said: “I was disappointed to see Bergwijn called up late for Holland because I think he could really do with two weeks under Conte.”

The time with Conte definitely could have helped Bergwijn regarding his confidence, but we’re not sure if he will be used in his preferred position considering the Italian is siding with wing-backs now.
Either way, it means he will miss out on the fitness programmes put on by Conte and his staff, which is something the Spurs players need.
