Usain Bolt has revealed that he wanted Antonio Conte to take over at his beloved Manchester United, although he backed the Italian to do well at Tottenham.
Before Spurs confirmed Conte as their head coach two weeks ago, the 52-year-old was being linked with the Man Utd job.
Fabrizio Romano later revealed that the former Inter boss was prepared to wait for the Red Devils to come knocking but Tottenham’s director of football Fabio Paratici called him after the Lilywhites’ 3-0 loss to United and convinced him to take over from Nuno Espirito Santo.
Spurs fans will be hoping that Conte is the man to take the club back into the Champions League and to break their trophy drought.
Eight-time Olympic gold medalist, Bolt, certainly thinks that Conte will make Tottenham a solid outfit by bringing in a few players who fit his system. The Jamaican sprinter raved about the Italian’s achievements over the past decade.
Bolt told The National News: “I wanted Conte [at Man Utd]. He is going to do so well at Spurs. He is going to get them organised.
“He has been at Chelsea – he won a title. He’s been at Inter Milan – he’s won a title. He’s been at Juve – he’s won a title. Everywhere he goes, he structures the team so well.
“In January, he is probably going to get one or two players, then at the end of the season he is probably going to find proper players and bring them in.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While it remains to be seen how Conte will fare at Spurs, I do believe United made a mistake by not going for him after their 5-0 loss to Liverpool.
In a few years time, we might just look back on Tottenham’s 3-0 loss to United as potentially a huge result that shaped the two clubs’ fortunes.
