It was Antonio Conte’s first home Premier League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening and he marked it with a 2-1 win over Leeds United.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:
The Conte Choir – One of my favourite moments of the game came in the final few minutes. Spurs were sitting back a little and the crowd had fallen flat until Conte waved his arms in the air like a conductor to get everyone going again. Great to see some passion on the touchline.
Tale of Two Halves – It was like night and day this evening with Tottenham. The first half was flat and void of any creativity. The second half was fast and energetic and full of chances. I think we should do the second more often! Was it a kick of the bum from Conte? A game plan all along? Who knows, but it worked in the end.
Sergio Reguilon – I think we all knew that Reguilon had the potential to be a wonderful wing-back, but this was the first example. Consistent energy up and down. Running in behing. Testing crosses. And a goal! He still has so much too improve on too, which is more exciting than frustrating.
The Return of Sess – Ryan Sessegnon was back on the pitch in the late stages and it was so good to see him again. Injuries have not been his friend but perhaps Conte and a LWB spot can be a reward. He is built for this position and showed that even in his brief cameo. He looked very bright and even scored, albeit offside.
Midfield Creativity – The first half must be addressed. Winks and Hojbjerg were overrun and struggled on the ball. Lucas and Son were muscled out of the game and were not allowed to turn on the ball. Tottenham essentially had no creative outlet beyond Kane dropping deep. Conte often likes a creative player in that midfield, so it could be time for Ndombele or Lo Celso to rise… or perhaps a dip into the transfer market is needed.
