Simon Jordan has warned Antonio Conte that he needs to manage expectations at Tottenham after the club was humiliated by losing to Slovenian side NS Mura in the Europa Conference League.
Spurs put in a turgid away performance against their opponents who are rooted to the bottom of Group G and are now at risk of exiting the competition at the group stage.
A dissatisfied Conte criticised his side’s performance in Slovenia, despite the line-up containing the likes of Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele starting the encounter.
Former Crystal Palace owner Jordan believes the side Conte selected was more than capable of overpowering their opposition, but also suggested Spurs chairman Daniel Levy should be braced for more honest admissions from the Italian going forward.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: “If you’re Daniel Levy, you would know what you’ve signed as a manager. If you didn’t then you shouldn’t have taken him on board.
“Because I don’t assume Antonio Conte was a shrinking violet in the negotiations about what he wanted from Tottenham.
“From how much he gets paid, who he brings with him to what he expects the support mechanism to look like.
“Whatever you say about not being a magician, please don’t tell me that squad isn’t good enough to beat that side yesterday.”
Although Jordan appeared to back Conte’s methods in criticising the performance, he also warned the former Inter Milan boss that he may need to lower his expectations having arrived in North London with a proven track record of attaining silverware.
Jordan added: “He can’t say anything can he? What can he say? That performance yesterday was turgid and poor and at its worst against rank amateur opposition.
“But it’s not something that Tottenham haven’t thrown out before. I understand it because he has to protect himself, he will be being brought forward as the cure for all ails.
“He wants to manage that expectation, because if he doesn’t manage that expectation, he’s going to be in the firing line quicker than a quick thing from quick-land.
“Because people are going to say, ‘Hold on, you’re supposed to fix things’.
“Tottenham’s squad is good enough to overcome the opposition they played yesterday so everybody’s in the mix for that performance yesterday, including the manager.”
Spurs Web Opinion
In all honesty, Spurs need a manager like Conte to tell it how it is and not be a ‘yes man’ when things aren’t going well. Unfortunately, a lot of people involved with the club have been coasting over the last couple of seasons so, hopefully, Conte will be able to whip them into shape.
