UEFA have confirmed that Tottenham’s Europa Conference League clash against Rennes will not be rescheduled as they were unable to find a solution that suits both parties, The Evening Standard have revealed.
Tottenham were due to take on Rennes at home on Thursday in their final group stage fixture, with the North Londoners needing all three points to secure a place in the knockout stage of the competition.
However, the game had to be called off following an outbreak of COVID-19 at Spurs, which has led the first-team complex at Hotspur Way being closed and the players now having to train from home.
After the game was called off, Rennes, who have already sealed top spot in the group, released a statement on Wednesday night accusing Spurs of a ‘lack of fair play’ and of ‘unilaterally’ cancelling the fixture.
UEFA have now revealed that they could not work out a solution for the rescheduling of the fixture and that the case will now be decided by their Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body.
UEFA’s statement on the matter reads: “Following a COVID-19 outbreak in the team of Tottenham Hotspur FC ahead of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage match against Stade Rennais FC, scheduled to take place on 9 December 2021 in London, the match could not take place.
“In accordance with Annex J of the UEFA Europa Conference League regulations, UEFA, in cooperation with the two clubs tried to find a viable solution in order to reschedule the match, so as to ensure the group stage could be completed accordingly.
“Unfortunately, despite all efforts, a solution that could work for both clubs could not be found.
“As a consequence, the match can no longer be played and the matter will, therefore, be referred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the above-mentioned competition regulations.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Rennes were evidently pretty angered by the postponement and they likely were not too eager to have the game played at a later date as they had already qualified.
However, one would certainly expect the Ligue 1 club to have a little more sympathy with the Spurs players and staff given the situation at the North London club at present.
