Finance expert reveals how much Spurs could lose if they are knocked out of Europe
Football Finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley has said Tottenham could lose out on a sizeable amount of revenue should UEFA rule that the North London club are out of the Europa Conference League.
Tottenham’s final group game against Rennes was called off due to an outbreak of Covid-19 at the Premier League club.
UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body’s decision will now decide the outcome of the match after admitting that a date for rescheduling the fixture could not be worked out.
Spurs need all three points in the match to qualify for the playoff round ahead of Vitesse Arnhem, with Rapid Wien set to be their next appoints should they make it.
Antonio Conte was seemingly infuriated with the alleged injustice in his press conference on Wednesday, with the Italian adamant that Tottenham cannot be punished for the Premier League and UEFA’s inability to settle on a date for their match against Rennes.
Plumley has explained that Spurs will not just be missing out on the opportunity to win a European trophy should the ruling go against them but they could also lose up to £12m in additional matchday income by not playing in the knockout stages.
He told Football Insider: “Spurs generally average around £3m to £3.5m per home match in the last couple of seasons.
“That depends on the quality of opposition and the competition, so you would expect that to be a little bit lower in the Conference League.
“So it would maybe be closer to £2.5m for the Rennes match because you wouldn’t have got a big attendance.
“In more general terms, the maximum amount of prize money is just under £13m.
“They got around £3.5m in the group stage, so that’s already secured. So we’re talking about £12m total.”

The lost revenue would certainly be something the club would have considered given that they are still recovering from the financial impact of the pandemic. Unlike in the group stage, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would have gone back to full capacity in the latter stages of the tournament.
