Liverpool have suffered a big blow ahead of their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday after three of their players tested positive for COVID-19.
Nine Premier League fixtures have been called off already this month due to the outbreak of the virus at various clubs, including Tottenham’s clashes against Brighton and Leicester.
Spurs’ game against Burnley was also postponed earlier in the month due to heavy snowfall at Turf Moor.
As things stand the North London club’s clash against Liverpool on Sunday is expected to go ahead, with Tottenham set to be in Premier League action for the first time since December 5 when they beat Norwich 3-0.
However, Liverpool have now confirmed they will be without Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones for the match after the three players returned positive tests. The Reds confirmed that all the other players in their first-team squad returned negative tests.
Liverpool released a statement on their official website which states: “Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Virgil van Dijk will miss tonight’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United after registering suspected positive tests for COVID-19.
“The three players are now isolating. As a result, the entire Reds’ set-up, including all players and staff, were tested for COVID-19 again today with no further positive cases being detected.”

Hopefully, there are not any more positive cases at Liverpool before Sunday’s game and they will be able to fulfil the fixture.
If the game on Sunday is postponed, the Premier League would not have much choice but to suspend the competition as one team having four games in hand over some of their rivals will call the fairness of the competition into question.
