Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has claimed that the emergence of Heung-min Son played a part in Dele Alli’s demise at Tottenham Hotspur.
The England international completed a deadline day move to Everton which saw him head to Goodison Park in a transfer which could be worth up to £40million for the north Londoners if performance-related add ons are met (Sky Sports).
The former MK Dons player was once considered to be one of the best young midfielders in European football having flourished under the management of Mauricio Pochettino and became one of the key players during the Argentine’s five-and-a-half-year stint in charge of Tottenham.
In recent years the 25-year-old has struggled to impress under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte before being shown the door at Spurs on the final day of the transfer window.
Wright believes that while Son has flourished in the role of almost a second striker behind Harry Kane, it has had a knock-on effect on Dele.
He told Premier League Productions (03/02/21 at 12:05 pm): “We saw Dele’s rise, then it kind of went stagnant for him. The problem Dele has is that, with the emergence of Son, who plays as that second striker. It kind of negates Dele.
“He’s not a ten. He’s not an out-and-out striker and he is in that place where Son is now taken and made his own.
“If we are going to be totally honest, he is better in that position. Dele has been trying to find his way back, in whatever system and whatever manager he has been under.
“But it’s not worked out. He maybe needs a move like this and under a manager like Frank [Lampard].”

For whatever reason, Dele’s career has gone into freefall in recent years having courted plenty of attention off the pitch with clothing deals and gaming-related activities.
It has been a sad end to his career at Spurs and now has it all to prove he can still be a top player having been given a lifeline by Frank Lampard.
