Antonio Conte has opened up on Bryan Gil’s loan back to La Liga, hinting that the youngster needs to become stronger and more physical to compete in the Premier League.
Gil was signed in the summer of 2021 from Sevilla, with Spurs paying £21.6m and sending Erik Lamela the other way as part of the deal (Sky Sports).
However, the young Spaniard lasted just six months in England before Spurs took up the decision to loan him back to La Liga, this time heading to Valencia until the end of the 2021/22 campaign (The Athletic).
Gil struggled to adapt to the Premier League during his initial months in England, still waiting for his first start in the competition despite appearing nine times (TransferMarkt).
Conte has claimed that he has a vision for Tottenham moving forward and a structure he wants to build, and it appears Gil going out on loan is a part of that.
He said (Football London): “I like to tell the truth. We are talking about a really good player, he has good quality. He understands football quickly and at this moment for sure this league is very tough.
“If you compare this league with another league you play another sport here. When you sign a player you have to consider many aspects because this league is very difficult. You can be good and creative but at the same time you need to be strong and physical.
“I have my vision and I am here to help the club. In the past, I have built good structure and teams that have lasted time, even without me. We need to build structure. We need to make sure we don’t repeat mistakes in the future, we have to reduce the mistakes.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
Perhaps Valencia have been asked to bulk Gil up a bit and work on his strength. I can’t help but feel Spurs should have loaned him to a low Premier League or high Championship club to get some consistent minutes in England, if they want him long-term.
