Antonio Conte believes that Tottenham tried their best in a difficult January transfer window, while also claiming there have been mistakes in the past.
Spurs had a very busy January in terms of incomings and outgoings, with two new faces joining the first-team squad, one permanent sale, and three loans.
Dejan Kulusevski was signed on an 18-month loan from Juventus, with Spurs paying £2.5m in the first year, £5.8m in the second year, and a potential £29.2m obligation to buy if certain criteria are met (Sky Sports).
Kulusevski’s Juventus teammate, Rodrigo Bentancur also made a permanent move to North London, with an upfront fee of £15.8m, as well as an extra £5.7m in potential future add-ons (Sky Sports).
Bryan Gil, Tanguy Ndombele, and Giovani Lo Celso were all sent out on loan, despite the latter two being marquee signings during the latter stages of Pochettino’s time in charge. Dele Alli was also sold permanently to Everton on deadline day.
Conte hinted that some of these loan deals pointed towards past mistakes from Spurs.
He said (Football London): “About the transfer market I think the club tried to do the best and you know very well that January is not simple, it’s not easy and I think the club tried to do the best. It’s not simple and then to sign players you don’t have a lot of options. That’s it.”
Conte added: “Yeah but I think we signed two new players. Rodrigo and Dejan and they are the right prospect of following Tottenham philosophy. Young talented players to improve and they are important players for the future but you need time to do this.
“For the players who went out on loan it was right. For sure it was strange to send out on loan four players and one transfer in January, it showed something went wrong in the past.
“Maybe there were some mistakes in the past. You have to buy players to reinforce your team but if you send away players that you bought in the last two or three years it means you did something wrong in the past.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
Mistakes were made in the past. I think it is no coincidence these mistakes came directly after the Champions League Final when Spurs had some extra cash and were seemingly desperate to spend big. Hopefully, the scouting will improve under Fabio Paratici.
