Fabio Paratici has admitted that it is not always possible to sign first-choice transfer targets sunce many clubs around Europe are likely to go after the same players.
Tottenham were frustrated in their attempts to sign both Adama Traore and Luiz Diaz in January, with the the club having reportedly seen their deals hijacked by Barcelona and Liverpool respectively (Telegraph).
According to The Athletic, Spurs had agreed on a fee with Porto for Diaz and on personal terms with the Colombian before Liverpool stole him from under the Lilywhites’ noses.
Tottenham losing out on the aforementioned players caused plenty of frustration among some Spurs fans on social media.
The north Londoners eventually completed deadline day swoops for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodgrio Bentancur – two names that are arguably not as exciting as the likes of Diaz.
However, Paratici has now explained that it is normal to lose out in the race for top players, insisting that it would be much more problematic if Tottenham are not in the race to begin with.
Spurs’ managing director of football told Spurs TV: “It’s normal for us to be in the middle of this kind of rumours and it’s also normal when you start the race and to fight to sign big players.
“We are a big club, there are 10-12 big clubs in the world, so it’s normal when you start to race or to fight to sign a big player. Of course, you have somebody that deserves to sign this player too.
“Sometimes you win, as what happened with [Cristian] Romero in the summer, and sometimes you can lose the race. I think the worst and strange thing is not being in the race. We are here to build something bigger and I know, we know we need patience and time to build something.
“We can’t build something in one month, six months, we need time. We have to be committed and, like I said before, to be in the race when there is somebody good enough for us.
“We want to sign players who can improve our team, we don’t sign just to sign. That is not useful for the club, not useful for the coach, not useful for everybody. There are some positions where we searched and find solutions and others where we don’t have this kind of opportunity. It’s ok, we go ahead, we go forward with our players and we are happy about it.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Since one’s happiness and contentment is always defined by their expectations, it stands to reason that fans of all clubs are rarely satisfied these days by their team’s transfer business.
For example, most Spurs fans would likely have been quite content if they had been told at the start of January that we would sign Kulusevski and Bentancur.
However, once their expectations rose after our pursuit of Diaz, the fan base was likely to be disappointed with what followed.
That is why I believe most fans would be better off not getting their hopes up regarding the idea of any new signings based on transfer rumours. It is always better to wait until something is made official.
