Jamie Carragher has praised the way in which Liverpool swooped in at the last moment to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Porto winger Luis Diaz in January.
According to The Athletic, Tottenham had agreed on a fee with Porto for Diaz and had also settled on personal terms with the winger before Liverpool stole him from under the North London club’s noses.
The report explained that the Colombian was enthusiastic about the prospect of joining Spurs but the offer of Champions League football at Anfield and the chance to work under Jurgen Klopp swayed the 24-year-old.
It was also stated that Daniel Levy was unhappy with the way in which Liverpool conducted themselves and the transfer saga could usher in a period of hostility between the Reds and Spurs.
However, Carragher believes Liverpool acted smartly, just like they always do in the transfer market, and insisted that Diaz adds a lot more strength in depth to their squad.
When asked about his former club’s signing of Diaz, the pundit told The Liverpool Echo: “Brilliant and it was typical Liverpool.
“There was no real speculation that Liverpool were going to sign anyone and that’s what really impresses me about Liverpool as a club and how they do their transfer business.
“It’s done, they’re clinical, they do it and it’s been a great success story in the last five or six years what Liverpool do transfers-wise.
“I know sometimes people get frustrated because we’re not buying lots of players but the way we do it, the way we go about it, I think it’s really impressive.
“The signing, who knows but more often than not Jurgen Klopp and the people making the transfer decisions get it right and I’m sure this will be the same.
“It could be a turning point but I think the signing isn’t just for right now, it’ll be how good Luis Diaz does over the next five or six years.
“Does he eventually break into that so-called front three if you like? Jota’s done that, can Luis Diaz be the next one to do that? I think it does provide much better strength behind the front four if one of them is ruled out or you’re making a change from the bench.
“I think it makes a huge difference because we very rarely bring someone off the bench who is on par with someone who is already on the pitch. I think this is definitely the case now.”
Spurs Web Opinion
One cannot comment on Liverpool’s tactics in signing Diaz without knowing the ins and outs of what really happened.
While Spurs fans’ frustrations at not singing the 24-year-old is understandable, we have to accept that this is going to happen when we go after top players.
As Fabio Paratici remarked in his interview with Spurs TV last week, a lot of big clubs are also likely to target such players and we are going to lose out on some of them.
What would be more alarming is if Tottenham are not even in the race for players such as Diaz.
