Antonio Conte has opened up on the return of Cristian Romero to the Tottenham starting XI following a long-term hamstring injury.
The Argentine central defender started in Conte’s very first Premier League match in charge of Spurs, but has been unable to add to his tally since then.
Romero overstretched on international duty with Argentina and subsequently missed 11 Premier League matches under Conte (TransferMarkt).
However, Tottenham’s summer signing finally made his return at the weekend against Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round, putting in a trademark no-nonsense display.
Conte has now described the defender as like ‘a new signing for me’, seeing as the South American has only played a total of three matches under the former Inter Milan manager.
With Eric Dier now struggling with a minor muscle issue, ruling him out of the fixture against Southampton tomorrow night (Football London), Conte will be relying on Romero to keep things solid at the back.
Conte said (Football London): “He is an important player for me. He is a new signing for me because he played three games with me, and only one game in the league.
“He is an important player for me and the team. He is strong and he anticipates, he has a good personality to play with the ball. He has good experience and I like him. He has a lot of space for improvement.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I just want to see Eric Dier and Cristian Romero get a run in the starting XI together, but that doesn’t appear to be on the cards at the moment. In his absence, I would have Romero filling Dier’s central role and Davinson Sanchez on the right.
