Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are likely to face plenty of competition for the Lille’s Sven Botman but insisted the North London club will sign a centre-back in the summer ‘for sure’.
Tottenham did not manage to strengthen their backline during the January transfer window but a left-sided centre-back is thought to be a priority for the club in the summer.
The Telegraph revealed earlier this month that Botman is one of the names who ranks high on Spurs’ wishlist for the position but added that Newcastle have also earmarked the Dutchman as a potential target.
According to reports, the Magpies made multiple offers for the 22-year-old during the January transfer window which were turned down by Lille (The Athletic).
Romano has now backed Eddie Howe’s side to reignite their interest in Botman and revealed that the rumoured Spurs target was also on the radar of AC Milan.
However, even if a deal for Botman proves unfeasible for Tottenham, Romano believes the North London club will strengthen in central defence.
Here’s what the journalist tweeted:
+ AC Milan pushing for Botman, and Newcastle working on this deal too since January. Important to clarify.
but Spurs will sign a new centre back for sure!

A left-sided centre-back would obviously be a priority for Conte in the summer, with Ben Davies lacking any competition for the role at the moment.
I will not be surprised if Tottenham let Rodon and Tanganga leave, and bring in another centre-back who can play as a central sweeper as well as on the right side of the back three.
Sanchez might be kept as a squad player but that would likely depend on how the Colombian performs for the rest of the season.
