Harry Kane has revealed that his failed loan spells at Norwich City and Leicester City made him determined to become a success at Tottenham.
Kane, who has established himself as a household name at Spurs, progressed through the club’s academy before temporarily flying the nest to hone his craft down the football pyramid.
Having undergone positive spells at Leyton Orient and Millwall respectively, the striker secured a loan move to fellow Premier League side Norwich for the 2012-13 season.
In a loan hampered by a metatarsal injury, it was cut short by parent club Spurs, who recalled him in February 2013 after the club failed to bring in attacking reinforcements during January’s transfer window (Evening Standard).
Kane was loaned out to then Championship side Leicester later that month but couldn’t nail down a spot in the line-up as the Foxes missed out on promotion in the play-off semi-final.
However, the challenging campaign which saw Kane fail to make the grade for two clubs stuck firm in the memory of Harry, who used it as inspiration to spur him on to be a success at Tottenham.
The England captain said in BT Sport’s latest episode of What I Wore: “The Norwich and the Leicester ones for sure are probably the toughest times I had in my career.
“I had two great loan spells at Leyton Orient and Millwall, I’d done really well and then I went to Norwich.
“I couldn’t quite get in the team and then I got injured so I came back and went to Leicester. I found myself on the bench a lot, played a few games and didn’t quite do it.
“It’s probably the time where I thought to myself that I’m not playing for Leicester in the Championship at the time, how can I play for Tottenham?
“It was a moment I stuck together, had good family and friends around me who believed in me, I’ve always had self-belief and I just said to myself that I’m going to go back to next season with Spurs and give it everything I’ve got.
“Fortunately, I got my opportunity and I was able to take it.
“A great learning curve even though it didn’t go as well as I wanted, I think it was an important part of my story to be where I’m at now.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Kane’s story is pretty extraordinary considering he came onto the scene out of the blue and on the back of two challenging loan spells. But he didn’t sit there and give up, and he used them as something to motivate him into becoming the great striker for club and country he is today.
