Antonio Conte has claimed that commitment on the training ground is not enough, hinting that his players need to show more on actual matchdays.
Tottenham have been extremely up and down under the Italian in recent months, with the latest result coming in the form of a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.
Spurs looked to have turned a corner when they beat Man City 3-2 at the Etihad, but followed that up with a 1-0 loss to Burnley. Next came a 4-0 thrashing of Leeds United, before the surprising FA Cup exit.
Conte revealed he was frustrated by the result as the Tottenham story is one of continuous ups and downs in recent years. He added that it was impossible for him or any manager to change this pattern in a short space of time.
The Lilywhites are next in action against Everton in the Premier League on Monday Night Football and, if the up and down pattern continues, it could be a fruitful event for Conte and his players.
Conte said (Football London): “The commitment is always very high on the training ground. It is not enough to only have a good committment in the training session. You arrive and during the game you need something more.”
On Middlesbrough, he added: “My reaction was that I was disappointed. Frustrated for the result, for sure to have this up and down.
“I say this from my first day when I arrive. The Tottenham story is this, many ups and downs.
“To be competitive and to win something and to try to fight for something important. To be stable and avoid this up and down. To change this type of situation. Especially to change the story of this club for 20 years.
“For sure sometimes you have to be upset. Sometimes, it’s normal to be angry.”
He added (Jonathan Veal): “To change this type of situation that for many, many years is not simple. In a short term, it is impossible to do this, not only me but for every manager to come here and change the situation.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
As Spurs have done for the last three years, the team has the tools to beat anyone on their day. We saw that away to Man City. What they don’t have is the consistency as a squad to maintain that level, which is hopefully what Conte can bring if he is backed.
