Tottenham Hotspur picked up another Premier League win last night when they managed to sink five past Everton without reply, hauling them back into the top four race.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:
Sessegnon vs Reguilon – This battle is really heating up and in a good way for Antonio Conte. Sessegnon started the match again, his sixth start in a row, and put in a fine first half performance. Although a little sloppy on the ball, his late runs into the Everton final third and his deadly crossing brought Spurs a lot of joy, including the opening goal. However, the youngster was forced off at half-time through injury and Sergio Reguilon was handed a chance to impress, scoring with his first touch and looking a real menace throughout. It’s looking to be a tough choice for Conte on that side at the moment.
Doherty vs Emerson – This side is perhaps a far easier decision for the Spurs boss at the moment. Matt Doherty put in arguably his best performance in a Tottenham shirt last night, coming up with two superb assists for Harry Kane. Not only that, but the Irishman’s passing in tight spaces was incredible and he seems to have formed a nice understanding with Dejan Kulusevski on that side. With Doherty finally coming into his own, Emerson Royal will need to step up or make do with a spot on the bench.
Son’s shooting boots – It wasn’t quite Sonny’s night, despite scoring in the first half to make it 2-0 to Tottenham. The South Korean could and should have had a hat-trick and even the shot that went in was largely down to a Jordan Pickford error. However, with Son often being labelled a purple patch player, perhaps the winger scoring without playing well is a sign of great progress.
The signs are there – The Conte system is starting to work. Yes, the inconsistency is a huge problem for Tottenham, but there are signs of life. When the wing-backs are getting into assisting and scoring positions for fun, you know Antonio is stamping his mark on the squad. Doherty assisted two. Sessegnon made the first goal. Reguilon scored. Plus, everyone around them is starting to get used to their new jobs. Positive signs, or a step forward just to take another back on Saturday?
Top four race – Arsenal are by far the favourites to finish fourth, in my opinion. However, with Man United and West Ham struggling, Tottenham are somehow still alive. If the Lilywhites can get a win at Old Trafford on Saturday, you just never know, especially with a North London Derby to come. Do I expect Spurs to get fourth? It’s asking a lot. However, I would love for them to put up a fight and show they aren’t a million miles away.
