Marcus Edwards believes he was misunderstood at Tottenham and received an unfair reputation because of rumours about his attitude.
Edwards left Spurs in 2019 to join Portuguese side Vitoria having made just one senior appearance for the club (Transfermarkt).
The 23-year-old’s departure shocked many at the time considering he was one of Tottenham’s brightest academy prospects, having progressed through the club’s youth system.
But there were questions raised during an unsuccessful loan spell at Norwich, where he returned to Spurs after just three months having been limited to just six minutes of action in total.
Then Canaries manager Daniel Farke claimed Edwards still needed to ‘grow up’ (Eastern Daily Press), while it was later reported his loan was cancelled due to poor time-keeping and attitude problems (Telegraph).
And Edwards, whose positive displays with Vitoria recently earned him a move to Sporting, argues he was simply misunderstood at Spurs and his career in Portugal has allowed him to develop on and off the pitch.
He told the Independent: “I definitely think I’ve matured, but that just comes with age. At Tottenham, I was really young, I was 16 or 17. I was still a kid, still growing up and stuff. I’m a bit older now, I keep myself to myself.
“I definitely still think some people didn’t understand me. Now I know how to carry myself a bit differently.
“When I was younger, only certain coaches took the time out to really understand me and realise I’m just a normal guy, whereas now that’s a bit different.
“At the same time, I was still young so I had some growing up to do as well.”
On whether the confusion about his persona pushed him towards a slightly obscure career route, he added: “Maybe that did have a bit of an effect. It could have done. You know how rumours spread in football.
“When I was leaving Tottenham, some people didn’t want to take me because of stuff they’d heard.”

Many Spurs fans were pretty unhappy to hear that Edwards was leaving as he was probably the club’s most talented youngster at the time.
No one knows exactly what transpired apart from Edwards himself, but more than anything it is good that he has managed to forge a good career for himself and dispel any rumours of his ‘poor attitude’.
