Alasdair Gold has claimed that being paired with Rodrigo Bentancur in the middle of the park brings the best out of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
After an impressive first season at Tottenham following his move from Southampton in the summer of 2020, Hojbjerg has struggled to show the same sort of consistency this campaign.
The Dane started alongside Harry Winks in midfield last week in Tottenham’s FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough and neither one of them managed to cover themselves in glory as the Championship side knocked the Lilywhites out of the competition.
Bentancur came back into the starting eleven for Spurs’ clash against Everton on Monday and the Uruguayan certainly made his presence felt, dominating the midfield battle alongside Hojbjerg.
Gold has suggested on the back of Tottenham’s 5-0 win over Everton that Hojbjerg looks a lot more comfortable when paired with Spurs’ January acquisition than he does when he plays alongside Winks.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “He (Bentancur) understands what Conte wants, Conte really likes him. He has played less minutes because of the injury but he has been really good.
“I don’t want to dig out Winks, but Hojbjerg plays better when he is alongside Bentancur – whether it is that he unlocks something in him, he doesn’t have to do tasks, he looks more comfortable with Bentancur.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is unfair to single out Winks for criticism for our performance against Boro last week as none of our players (apart from Eric Dier) seemed like they fancied the battle at the Riverside Stadium. However, there is no doubt that Bentancur is our best all-around midfielder as the other three options all have some clear weaknesses.
