Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Antonio Conte’s passionate post-match outbursts are designed to communicate to his players and the Spurs hierarchy that he is not willing to passively accept mediocrity.
Over the past couple of months, the Italian has made some alarming comments following losses.
The most controversial of his statements came after Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor last month, with the 52-year-old suggesting that he might not be the right man to help the club turn their fortunes around (Football.London).
However, over the last few weeks, Conte seems to have dialled down his rhetoric and accepted the fact that patience is required in order to get Spurs to the level he wants to.
That was certainly apparent in his post-match press conference following his side’s 3-2 loss to Manchester United on Saturday, with the Tottenham head coach, calling for a sense of ‘calm’ and admitting that his players will improve with time (Football.London).
Romano has now explained that Conte’s previous outbursts came as a result of him being used to fighting for silverware at the business end of the season.
The journalist told 888Sport: “Conte is obsessed with winning: he is never really happy if he doesn’t have a trophy in his hands, this concept is replicated every day in his management of him at Tottenham.
“His furious reactions after the defeats come precisely from the intention to communicate to the players, the board, the chairman and the fans that Conte has no intention of passively accepting difficult situations: win or die, this is Antonio’s mentality.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I believe that Conte deserves a lot more criticism than he has been getting for our form over the past couple of months. While the players certainly deserve a big portion of the blame, the Italian has to take some responsibility for his tactical inflexibility.
Some Spurs fans seem to think that nothing Conte does can ever be questioned because of the success he has had in his career. However, football is constantly evolving and there is no guarantee that the 52-year-old’s methods will be successful at Tottenham, given the level of managers he is competing against in the Premier League at the moment.
In fact, the performances that we produced against the likes of Burnley and Boro were arguably as bad as anything we saw under Nuno and towards the end of Mourinho’s reign at the club. What is also clear is that Conte seems unwilling to take responsibility for results and prefers to point the finger at the players.
