Son Heung-min has admitted that Tottenham have learned a lot from some of their recent defeats and hailed the impact that Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur have had both on and off the pitch.
Tottenham have been struggling for consistency over recent months. In fact, the North Londoners’ 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday was the first time since Boxing Day that the club have registered two back-to-back wins in the Premier League (Evening Standard).
Son insisted the team has learned lessons from each one of their losses and are now all the better for it.
He told Tottenham’s official matchday programme ahead of the West Ham match (Volume 114 – Issue 22 as relayed by Football London): “We have had ups and downs recently.
“Football, of course, is always about results and there will always be some disappointment because sometimes we can do much better, but we are moving in the right way.
“We are improving and of course there is still a lot of room to improve further – when we watch match clips and videos back with the video analysts, there is always more we can work on.
“As a team, we should always be thinking there is so much room for improvement. So, if you lose a game, like at Manchester United, you can of course look at it in a negative way like ‘okay, we have played well but we lost’.
“Of course, we are going to be disappointed, but we also have to look for the positives – the chance to improve. We can take lessons from those disappointing results, and even when we win, like finding the right balance and consistency.
“We always want to do what we can and get the best results. We always want to get three points – that is always our aim.
“A good performance is of course important, but football is about winning, and I think there is a massive, massive potential with our amazing manager.”
Son admitted that he is really enjoying playing alongside both Kulusevski and Bentancur, speaking in glowing terms of both players’ attitude.
When asked about the club’s January additions, he said: “I’m really enjoying playing alongside them.
“They obviously came here from having been playing in one of the best teams in the world, so they have great experience, and they bring so much positive energy.
“They have a great work rate and a great attitude, which is always needed. Both of them are doing really well, so I hope that continues. They support us so well as a team and I want to help them as well to fully settle in the Premier League and at Tottenham.”
The win over the Hammers has brought the Lilywhites within touching distance of fourth place, with Spurs now sitting just three points off Arsenal, who have a game in hand over their North London rivals.
When asked about Tottenham’s Champions League ambitions, Son responded: “Of course, we want to finish in the top four and play in the Champions League next season, but we have to look at this game-by-game.
“If we play our game, in our system with belief and passion, I think that could change everything because, if you focus on anything else, you are going to lose our system and style, and we don’t want that. That will be the most important thing for us in the last two months of the season.”

Despite the way results have gone over the last couple of months, we look a much better outfit now than we did before the turn of the year, when we were actually winning with more consistency. The video analysis following our losses seem to be having the desired effect on the team.
