According to The Times, Brentford are confident that Christian Eriksen will extend his stay at the club beyond the end of the season, unless a big club comes knocking.
Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest in the European Championship last summer, penned a six-month contract with Brentford in January and has impressed in the three appearances he has made for the Bees so far (Transfermarkt).
The attacking midfielder also scored on his return to the Denmark side on Saturday in their 4-2 loss to the Netherlands.
Antonio Conte hinted last month that he would be open to the prospect of the 30-year-old completing a fairytale return to Spurs in the summer (StadiumAstro).
The Times have now revealed that Brentford believe the midfielder would pen a longer-term contract with them in the summer, unless a top-six club comes calling.
While the Bees are yet to make a formal contract offer to the former Spurs man, it is said they believe the player may feel a sense of loyalty to the club, where he is working with compatriots such as Thomas Frank, Christian Norgaard and Matthias Jorgensen.
The report adds that Brentford anticipate Eriksen will wait until the end of the season to make a decision on his future, with the club currently in the midst of a relegation battle.
Spurs Web Opinion
As special as it would be to see Eriksen back in a Spurs shirt, I suspect that Paratici and Conte will be guided by pragmatism rather than a sense of romanticism while finalising the club’s transfer targets.
Having said that, the opportunity to land a player of the 30-year-old’s quality on a free transfer might be too good to turn down for the North London club, particularly if he maintains his current form until the end of the season.
