Jamie Carragher has joked that Tottenham ‘haven’t shown up for about 20 years’ in response to a Spurs fan accusing Arsenal of being too afraid to play the North London derby.
Arsenal were set to travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January but the match was called off by the Premier League as a result of injuries, suspensions, Covid-19 cases and unavailability in the Gunners camp (Sky Sports).
With only one Arsenal player having tested positive for Covid at the time, the decision to postpone the game created quite a bit of controversy (Gary Neville).
The derby is now expected to be played the week commencing May the 9th (Football.London) and the match could well prove to be the decider in the race for Champions League qualification.
On The Overlap this week, Spurs fan Flav, who hosts the Fighting Cock Podcast, accused Arsenal of cowardice at having the North London derby called off, and Carragher responded by poking fun at the Lilywhites.
Flav stated: “Everyone’s praising Arteta here, but he was kind of leading the charge or the idea that Arsenal shouldn’t play Tottenham at White Hart Lane a couple of months ago. Showing blatant elements of cowardness.”
Carragher responded: “You have a problem when Tottenham are calling you cowards.”
Flav then added: “They did’t show up. They should have played that game”, to which
Carragher responded: “You haven’t shown up for about 20 years.”
Flav then finished off by reiterating: “They were too afraid to come and play Spurs at WHL because they were worried what the result might have been. They could have fielded a team. They had one case of COVID.”

What Flav said is factually correct as Arsenal did have the game called off despite having just one Covid case in their camp.
However, I do think other clubs would have similarly taken advantage of the Premier League’s ambiguous rules regarding postponements if they did not have a full-strength side for an important match.
