Daily Star journalist Paul Brown has claimed he would be very surprised if Tottenham Hotspur do not make an offer for Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij.
It was reported last month that Antonio Conte was keen on reuniting with De Vrij at Spurs and had personally asked the North London club’s hierarchy to swoop for the centre-back in the summer (Inter Live).
TuttoMercatoWeb subsequently reported that the Nerrazuri are ‘seriously considering’ the possibility of cashing in on the experienced defender when the transfer window reopens.
The report added that Inter could demand €25m (£20.7m) for the Netherlands international, whose contract at the San Siro runs out in 2023.
This was subsequently backed up by TuttoSport, who claimed the 30-year-old is one of the players the Nerrazuri are open to selling in order to fund moves for their transfer targets.
Brown believes that Spurs are nailed on to make an offer for De Vrij unless the experienced defender communicates that he has no interest in making the move.
When asked about the speculation linking the Inter star with a move to Tottenham, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I would be very surprised if a bid wasn’t made for him.
“The only reason I think they wouldn’t make a bid there is if they’re told by the player or the club that there’s no chance of him coming to Spurs. I think that’s very likely to happen this summer.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Spurs might need to enter the market for a cover for Eric Dier in the central sweeper role if Joe Rodon pushes for a move. De Vrij possesses the qualities to play that role but it remains to be seen if the Dutchman would be open to playing a bit-part role at this stage of his career.
