Brazilian forward Hulk has revealed that he agreed to join Tottenham last year but the move did not go through due to obstacles in getting a work permit.
Hulk was considered to be one of the most potent marksmen in European football during his time with Porto. However, the striker then went on to spend nine years playing in Russia and China, with Zenit Saint Petersburg and Shanghai SIPG respectively.
Last year, the 35-year-old returned to his home country, penning a contract with Atletico Mineiro. Hulk has been on fire since the move, having netted 54 goals and provided 16 assists for the Belo Horizonte based club (Transfermarkt) and has even earned a recall to the Selecao set-up.
The striker has now revealed that, before moving back to Brazil, he accepted an offer from Spurs but was not able to make the move since he did not receive a work permit to play in the UK.
Hulk said on the Conversa com Bial show (27/05/22 – as translated by Sport Witness): “The only proposal that really weighed for me to go, which I had said ‘yes’, was to England. There was a proposal from Tottenham. Mourinho, at the time, had given the ok.
“And due to the rules, because I was playing in China, a long time without playing in the Brazilian national team, I couldn’t play in England.
“So the lawyers tried to see if there was a loophole, there wasn’t. So it was the proposal that I would have accepted at that moment there.”

Signing Hulk on a free transfer to serve as Kane’s backup, would not have been the worst of ideas, and one can understand why Mourinho would have wanted to bring the Brazilian to the club. One can argue that the striker might have done at least as well as Carlos Vinicius did in North London.
