Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Gareth Bale has been awarded an MBE for services to football and charity.
The Welsh international made a £500,000 donation to help NHS staff in Wales during the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw the money go to the official NHS charity of Cardiff and Vale Health Board which is focused on providing further services to patients and staff which NHS finds typically do not cover (WalesOnline).
He also raised around a further £500,000 for hospitals in the Spanish capital of Madrid.
The 32-year-old confirmed on Wednesday his successful nine-year spell at Real Madrid has come to an end in which he became the first British player to win five Champions League crowns at the weekend after the club’s victory against Liverpool.
Bale has reportedly been contacted by a number of Premier League clubs after following his exit from the Santiago Bernabeu, according to Fabrice Hawkins (via Madrid Xtra).
Tottenham sent their congratulations to Bale today, who joins former Spurs teammate Harry Kane as an MBE (SkyNews).

Bale has often been criticised, especially in Spain, over his priorities with the infamous ‘Wales, Golf, Madrid’ banner, however, Bale has been a remarkable professional who has achieved more than what many players will dream of.
What he did for many charities both at home and abroad during the pandemic has to be applauded. Hopefully, a return to Spurs could be on the cards this summer.
