Alasdair Gold has predicted Tottenham may be pursuing Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet because the cheap nature of the deal will allow Fabio Paratici to allocate funds elsewhere (Football London).
Lenglet has emerged as a fresh target for Spurs with the club currently in talks with Barca about sealing a loan deal for the France international (Sky Sports).
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio recently increased speculation of the move’s proximity, claiming a short-term switch had already been completed.
And in attempting to dissect Tottenham’s decision to push for 27-year-old Lenglet despite his recent struggles in La Liga, Gold insisted the move will give the club some breathing room financially.
In a report for Football.London, he hinted that the lack of expense in a deal, which is expected to be a loan with an option to buy, could allow Tottenham to save cash for a potential big-money acquisition down the line.
The journalist speculated whether managing director Paratici could use the funds for another central defender of higher calibre – naming Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol as possible targets in future windows, if not this one.
Alasdair Gold wrote: ‘If Paratici does decide to grab Lenglet’s spinning plate then the cheap nature of the move means the Italian can put funds elsewhere, perhaps towards the second centre-back.
‘That Lenglet would likely be a loan, albeit with an option to buy, also allows Tottenham to look again at Gvardiol and Bastoni’s situation in addition in future windows if the door is firmly closed on them in this one.’
Spurs showed great interest in Bastoni earlier on in the transfer window after Conte made him a prime target to fulfil his request for a left centre-back (Daily Mail).
However, any move for the 23-year-old was ended by his agent Tullio Tinti, who confirmed his client would be staying at Inter this summer (Fabrizio Romano).
Tottenham also signalled their interest in signing talented Croatian defender Gvardiol (The Telegraph) but have again been met with disappointment with Express journalist Ryan Taylor claiming he is set to remain at Leipzig.
Spurs Web Opinion
Lenglet is a cheaper move given he is expected to be just a loan and although he isn’t the big-money name many have been craving, it will give Spurs time to fully consider their main targets.
Bringing him in should still provide some cover for Eric Dier in particular which is always a bonus with more substitutes coming into play.
