Clement Lenglet has admitted that he spoke with his international teammate Hugo Lloris regarding Tottenham before making a move from Barcelona.
Following the arrivals of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, and Richarlison, Lenglet became Spurs’ fifth signing of the summer on Friday.
The centre-back joins the Lilywhites on a season-long loan move but contrary to previous reports, Tottenham do not have the option to make the deal permanent (Sport).
According to The Athletic, Lenglet’s name was a fair way down Antonio Conte’s wishlist for a left centre-back at the start of the summer but Spurs decided to pursue the Frenchman because of the Italian’s keenness to have the key signings completed as early as possible.
The on-loan Barca man will not only have to adapt to Conte’s system but he will also need to get accustomed to the physicality and the intensity of the Premier League.
Lenglet admitted that he is looking forward to the challenge of testing himself in a new environment.
The centre-back told Spurs TV: “When you speak to a player who plays in the Premier League, they say it is a beautiful league where you fight every week and it’s very hard to win
“I’m very happy to be here, to be in this city, at this club. I speak with friends, with my family, to take my decision and all the words were very, very good speaking about the club.
Lenglet also spoke about the conversations he had with his international skipper ahead of the transfer.
He added: “Hugo is a Tottenham legend. I spoke a lot with Hugo to know about the city and everything to ensure I am good with my family in London.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While reports continue to link Tottenham with the likes of Pau Torres (talkSPORT), I think Lenglet is likely to be the only centre-back that the club sign this summer. Even if Rodon and one of Sanchez or Tanganga leave, that would leave Conte with five different options for the three centre-back positions.
