Tottenham youngster Dane Scarlett has admitted that he is excited about showing what he can do at Portsmouth during the upcoming campaign after sealing a season-long loan move to the south coast club.
Scarlett has been one of the standout players in Tottenham’s Under-18 and Under-23 set-ups over the last couple of years.
The teenager, who was handed his senior debut for the Lilywhites back in 2020, regularly made Tottenham’s matchday squad in the second half of last season.
The 18-year-old even earned praise from Antonio Conte, with the Italian labelling the teenager ‘a really important prospect’ for the club (Football.London).
Scarlett, who was instrumental in England’s successful European Under-19 Championship campaign this summer, will now test himself in League One after sealing a temporary move to Fratton Park this week.
The youngster told Pompey’s official website about the move: “This is an ambitious club with plenty of history and so I see a real opportunity for me at Pompey.
“I spoke to the gaffer and what he said to me was appealing, so now I’m just really excited to get started.”
Scarlett has admitted that he has benefited hugely from being able to train with the likes of Harry Kane on a regular basis.
He added: “Getting to see – and compete against – some of the best players in the world every day in training has helped me.
“You can learn so much from Harry Kane just by watching him and everything he does on the pitch is perfect.”
The striker expressed his delight at linking up with his former Spurs academy teammate Josh Oluwayemi, with the goalkeeper penning a contract with Portsmouth after being released by Spurs earlier this summer.
He said: “Now I’m excited to meet the boys here and I only really know Josh Oluwayemi, who recently signed.
“We’ll be looking to win as many games as possible this season and personally, I’m looking to kick on and get some more minutes.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Scarlett is still extremely young and he will certainly learn a lot by going through the rigours of competitive first-team football at such a young age.
However, Spurs fans should temper their expectations regarding the 18-year-old and should not expect him to hit the ground running.
It might take the youngster another year or two to start fulfilling his potential, as was the case with Troy Parrott.
