Corriere dello Sport have claimed that Tottenham reached an agreement with AS Roma for the transfer of Nicolo Zaniolo last week but Jose Mourinho stopped the transfer from going through.
The report claims Roma had agreed to loan Zaniolo to Tottenham with an obligation to buy for €50m (£42.2m), which would be activated if some sporting parameters were met.
The North London club also allegedly contacted the winger’s entourage and reached an agreement on personal terms with the player.
However, Mourinho is then said to have met with the 23-year-old and convinced him not to make the move to N17.
The former Spurs boss is thought to have explained to the winger that this campaign is an important one for the Giallorossi and that he must remain at the club for his own sake.
The report claims Mourinho asked Zaniolo to sign a new contract at the Stadio Olimpico and leave the club next summer and the Portuguese coach’s words have had the desired effect of changing the player’s mind.
Corriere add that Spurs made another fresh attempt to snap up the Italy international yesterday but were informed by the Serie A club that they would no longer accept a loan with an obligation to buy and would only sell the winger permanently for €50m (£42.2m).
The report adds that the operation ‘is no longer viable’ for Antonio Conte’s men.

Mourinho could well have intervened and asked Zaniolo to stay, not only because he would not want to lose the 23-year-old but perhaps also because losing him to Spurs might be particularly distasteful for him.
One would expect Tottenham to walk away from the deal if Roma do not agree to a loan with an option to buy, given the injury problems that the winger has had over recent years.
